Humanity is on a tipping point, and unless we do something differently, we will never get the levels of trust, cooperation or inclusiveness necessary to solve our global problems, including climate change, bio-diversity, lack of food, to name a few!

Unfortunately, although today’s world is beset more by international tension and internal disorder and violence than outright inter-state wars and conflict, I can’t help feeling that the level of confidence in the international system’s ability to deal with conflict and promote peace has diminished in recent years. The Covid pandemic has reinforced an image of poor international cooperation, and a rise in national selfishness!

In einer friedlichen Welt gibt es keinen Platz für Diskriminierung – keine Gewalt gegen bestimmte ethnische Gruppen oder religiöse Minderheiten. Wenn unsere Gesellschaft all diese Attribute vereint, kann dieser Zustand als Frieden definiert werden. Das ist zumindest mein Verständnis von Frieden!

For me, sustainable peace is peace built on human security, not national security. We do not need more, “modernized” nuclear weapons. We do not need fully autonomous weapons that on their own can target and kill human beings. We need to use our resources so that the needs of people are met, not the needs of arms producers!

Nationale und internationale Strafgerichte können aber die Taten eindeutig als Unrecht brandmarken und die Überlebenden in ihrem Opferstatus anerkennen. Damit wird zugleich allen Täterinnen und Tätern, Geschädigten und Konfliktbeteiligten signalisiert, dass die internationale Staatengemeinschaft nicht gewillt ist, die systematische Verletzung von Menschenrechten hinzunehmen!

I remember when the officer took me by force while threatening me with a firearm. I was taken into his car and raped, I felt hopeless and devastated. That day broke my spirit and it felt like my life had lost meaning. For a long time I lived only because I had to!

Die Vereinten Nationen wurden im Jahr 1945 gegründet, um einen Dritten Weltkrieg zu verhindern. Dafür brauchen wir sie auch heute noch – vielleicht sogar mehr denn je. Die Weltorganisation ist aber weitaus mehr als der Sicherheitsrat. Die Vereinten Nationen sind die Antwort auf globale Herausforderungen wie den Klimawandel, Pandemien oder Migration!

Das Friedensprojekt Europa befindet sich am Scheideweg: Aus Corona, so unser Plädoyer, muss die Erkenntnis erwachsen, dass Europa gestärkt werden muss, um bei der nächsten Krise eine gemeinsame Antwort zu finden. Europa kann an der Corona-Krise wachsen. Dabei geht es nicht allein um finanzielle Ausgleiche, sondern auch darum, wie man innerhalb der Europäischen Union miteinander umgeht!

Right now I think the most dangerous place of all is in our own heads. And, perhaps that is always the case. Peace is an existential objective, as are security, safety, and well-being. And, to achieve peace, we need to stop seeing other people as “the other”!

Wir haben derzeit keine Anhaltspunkte für existierende Biowaffenprogramme; biologische Rüstungskontrolle ist somit präventive Rüstungskontrolle. Es ist daher mein Eindruck, dass die zentrale Norm der Ächtung von Krankheit als Waffe intakt und wirksam ist. Eine institutionelle Stärkung würde dem Vertragsregime dennoch gut zu Gesicht stehen!

Of course my father was aware of the consequences of his decision. He already had most of the formative moments of his personal development behind him. He knew what he was doing. My father’s decision to save the lives of his detachment and to ensure world peace is a sign of his strength, not his weakness!

Frieden heißt, eine haltbare Ordnung ohne Krieg zu schaffen, in der Konflikte zwischen und innerhalb von Staaten gewaltfrei ausgetragen werden!

The Ukraine crisis is our key security concern on the European continent nowadays. The real tragedy becomes clear when you look at the hundreds of thousands of people severely impacted by the conflict, living along the contact line in dire humanitarian situations. Their daily struggle does not make headlines on the front pages of our newspapers. But it is very real!

Die Fähigkeit sich selbst zu verteidigen ist die Voraussetzung für Verhandlungen auf Augenhöhe, für Entspannung, Abrüstung und eine gemeinsame Friedensordnung. Das hatten wir schon einmal erreicht in Europa. Warum soll uns das nicht ein zweites Mal gelingen? Dafür aber muss Europa sich selbst schützen und verteidigen können!

Accordingly, including China in a future arms control treaty would probably exert a downward pressure on US and Russian warhead numbers, as it is hard to see why China would otherwise agree to sign up. A new treaty that includes China would therefore be a positive development!
