Faces of Peace initiative launched: SIPRI Director Dan Smith the first Face of Peace

Kaarst, Sep 11 .2019 – Two years after founding the Faces of Democracy initiative the organizers announced the launch of the Faces of Peace initiative on September 11, 2019. The first “Face of Peace” is Dan Smith, who is a peace researcher and director of the internationally renowned Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Agreements instead of “deals”

“At a time when crises and potential for conflict are on the rise, agreed security agreements are terminated in the hope of a better “deal”, and international institutions are questioned in the public arena, we need more than ever an international social dialog of all security-relevant players,” says Sven Lilienström, Founder of the Faces of Peace initiative.

Lilienström stresses: “With the Faces of Peace initiative we would like to create awareness for the fact that safeguarding peace and security is not a business model of individuals, but rather a joint global challenge!”

The Faces of Democracy

To date over half a million people in 50 countries have signed the online commitment of the Faces of Democracy, which is the sociopolitical equivalent of the Faces of Peace initiative, in favor of protecting and strengthening basic civic and democratic values. More than 70 national and international individuals from politics, business, media, and society – including the President of the EU Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Norway Erna Solberg, and OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger support the Faces of Democracy initiative.
